What happened in May 2017

Sunday 29 of May

Teatime at 4 PM with the neighborhood. Some police controls at the road junction in Mandres in the afternoon, especially towards Mandres inhabitants (a neighbor of more than 80 years old had to go back to her place while she was at the way half, in order to bring her identity documents back…). A new demonstration of the base and foolish harassment of police headquarters.

Saturday 28 of May

On the evening, at the House of the Resistance: film screening of Pas Res Nos Aresta and discussions on the Amassada’s struggle against a transformer station in Aveyron, with some friends from there.

Friday 27 of May

We have been living in a period of high dynamism these past few days. We are preparing the meetings anti-prison (16-18 of June), and a lot of guests already have accepted our invitation. We’re also doing a lot regarding the endless birthday party week (19-26 of June), by making a trailer, construction work into the forest, and countless preparation meetings.

The everyday life continues in the kitchen garden, haying off and logging with the neighborhood. Some of us sometimes go to meet and party with those who live in the surrounding villages. The sun is back, as well as bathing time and the evenings around the fire, singing and laughing until dawn. Life is sweet when the helicopter and the police stop interfering.

Thuesday, 23 of May, police attacks on Lejuc barricades

11.20 AM : after a quick controntation between some friends watching on the north barricade and 15 mobile gendarmes, the squadron commander Bruno Dubois withdrew his troops but warns that police pressure won’t stop. We remind him that new appeals have just been made for Lejuc wood.

11.00 AM : the cops are between the north watchtower and the north barricade. A barricade is put on fire in the north to keep them away

10.30 AM : the cops might be near the north barricade : to be confirmed (no alert for now)

10.17 AM : the cops first moved back to the antenna, then to Mandres.

10.10 AM : the first barricade is on fire in front of the south watchtower to keep the gendarmes at a distance.

10 AM : a dozen of mobile gendarmes put helmets and shields to go to the first barricade. 3 cars block the road to the antenna.

09.55 AM : two mobile gendarmes trucks are in front of the barricade. The gendarmes go out of the car. They seem aggressive and walk to the barricade.

Thursday 18 May 2017, Mandres-en-Barrois city council

Mandres-en-Barrois city council holds a meeting at 8 PM. Only one topic on the agenda : regularizing Lejuc’s wood*  property by voting through a new consultation. On the 28th of February, the administrative court of Nancy invalidated the previous negotiation held on July 2nd 2015 at 6AM for being full of irregularities, and summoned Mandres municipality to sort out the situation for 4 months.

This municipal council is one more democratic masquerade in a project that has made social acceptability art. Therefore, we called for a massive gathering in front of the town hall square.

5.15 PM : we leave Bure disguised, walking in a mass march formation to the town hall of Mandres. Batucada, cheerful atmosphere.

5.43 : 50 mobile gendarmes block all access to the twon hall. Such a beautiful democratic masquerade : putting on the shoulders of 10 under pressure elected representatives of a 130 inhabitants village, the exchange of the wood that allows the beginning of the biggest European industrial project construction work ; and asking the police to protect the place where they have to discuss it , so that no one who’s against it will be able to say a word.

6.09 PM : we arrive at Mandres

6.15 PM : a lot of cops. All access to the town hall are blocked by riot barriers.

Around 8 PM : only a few people have been authorized to go in. The mobile gendarmes hit us to make the city councilors go in.

8.15 PM : the municipal council begins in a tense atmosphere. Some of us have been allowed to go in. The 11 councellors are present. The mayor recalls the facts, and what are ANDRA conditions regarding the exchange.

8.25 PM : during the meeting, one elected representative friend asks to talk before the vote: the mayor refuses… We make as much noise as we can to be heard into the council room.

8.30 PM : the secret ballot is held. Someone asks why is the mayor not asking if any counsellors are involved in any conflicts of interest.

8.36 PM : we sing and scream the famous “ANDRA DÉGAGE RÉSISTANCE ET SABOTAGE” (ANDRA GO AWAY: RESISTANCE AND SABOTAGE) with the batucada.

8.42 PM : vote results : 6 in favour of the exchange ; 5 The outcome of this vote will not break our determination. Next meetings : the “300 000 pas” to Saint-Dizier, and an action week from 19/06 to 26/06 (more informations coming soon)

Some inhabitants are going to appeal. Associations try to make more people join the fight and support those who occupy the wood.

*We’re occupying Lejuc wood since last summer

From the 16 to the 18 of June : anticarceral meetings

Anarchiste Bure Cross presents

16 – 18 of June

In Bure

The first anticarceral meetings

Film screening, discussions, food, workshop

Program and informations on

The new group Anarchist Bure Cross invites you to participate in discussions and film screening on the struggle against prison, from the 16 to the 18 of June at the House of the Resistance (Bure).

We want to meet those who want to fight for a total abolishment of the prison system and all forms of coercive systems in general. We don’t believe in the existence of alternatives to incarceration, considering that prison is a systematic tool for social control. Therefore, we want to analyze the carceral system in order to provide basis for organizing struggle networks against the prisons of today and tomorrow, and all systems that go with.

Around 30 news prisons are under construction in France : today, our political system tend to incarcerate more and more people who don’t fit to social norms. Prisons are full of strangers, poor people, and all those who fight against social injustice.

On the agenda :

  • On Friday we’ll freely discuss and share prison experiences and all detention experiences we lived or might live one day, especially after the Loi Travail social movement.

On the evening : film screening of a film about prison

  • On Saturday we will welcome Kyou and Nadia to talk about their books Beau comme une prison qui brûle (Beautiful as a burning jail) and A ceux qui se croient libres (For those who think they’re free) in which they talk about life in jail, incarcerated people they knew, the resistance inside, mutiny and past struggles against prison. An Gaël, with the book Frères de la côte (Brethren of the Coast) that describes the path of Somali pirates, incarcerated for a long time in France, cut off from their families. Some of the Somali friends incarcerated will be present.

Presentations, stands, discussions on struggles against prison in 1970-1980. Some friends from Libertalia and groups from this period might be here.

On the evening, live music  at the ancient train station of Luméville, 5km further from Bure.

  • On Sunday, we’ll open the discussion by putting on perspectives the struggle against prison we could ride in the future. We’ll also discuss with some Anarchist Black Cross french and international groups, and other groups against prisons implied in the struggle. Then we’ll have more concrete discussions on meetings, tools and organization forms, in and out of jails, and against the ones that are under construction.

  • During the undless birthday party week, on tuesday at noon, one canteen will be dedicated to the incarcerated people’s friends, taking place in front of a jail.
  • We invite you to bring documentation, films, infokiosques, friends and/or prisoners testimonies, to share on a table specially used for this.
  • And if you wanna suggest a discussion’s topic, a workshop, a political action, thanks for writing us at

Owly shit, It’s my birthday ! From the 19 to 26 of June : let’s make an endless birthday party !

Translation : Yaaay It’s my birthday !

Dear friends,

I invite you from the 19 to 26 of June

To celebrate my 1st birthday party

Into Lejuc Wood

An endless birthday party

We’ve been living in the wood for a year now !

We can feel today that the meaning of our lives can be found in autonomous communities. In the occupied rooms of the University, in the self-managed canteens, in the “zone to defend” (ZAD)… In Bure, the political quest for autonomy is taking place both in the collectives houses we bought and Lejuc wood. One year ago, we nested after having an endless pic nic in the wood to prevent the first construction works of the CIGEO project. From the 19 to 26 of June 2017, we want to celebrate this all year by having an endless birthday party into the woods !

We’ve been told that Lejuc wood can be evicted anytime, and the owls living there won’t survive summer 2017. This is what the authorities want us and need us to believe, but we won’t play their game. This won’t be a celebration of nostalgia : we want to create a new spark of life in the forest, new links between people, new practical attacks.

Two permanent reception services will be set at the south lookout and the north barricade, on monday morning, For all week, there’ll be self-managed camps (we’ll make a space for transsexual and gays people), constructions activities (solar showers, shacks for discussion groups, barricades, …), self-training workshops (climbing, bolas, flexible yurts, healthcare, chemistry,…), discussions on the autonomous struggle perspectives in France and elsewhere, some reading next to the fire, actions against police controls, role playing games, and obviously : accoustic music party on the week-end !

Come with all things you need (tent, sleeping bag, construction tools and equipment, dishes…) Even if we’ll cook together, bring some food to be independent as much as possible. We really hope that this birthday party will open up new possibilities for all summer. So let’s be as many as we can !

The owls of Bure

And if we are evicted before :

  • Meeting on the day at 6pm at the House of Resistance
  • Convergence towards Bure on the following days
  • Reoccupation of the forest on the following weeks
  • Call-out for decentralized actions against the promoters and contractors of CIGEO (VINCI, EIFFAGE, EDF, ANDRA, AREVA, CEA…)

PDF handout about the eviction : spread it everywhere ! 😉

Press release : illegitimate vote, legal disaster, police invasion : the inexorable headlong rush of CIGEO

A village is in a state of siege over its city council,  the “300 000 pas” demonstration is under close surveillance, a helicopter hedge hops and flies above Bure, several groups of mobile policemen stand with helmets and shields in front of Lejuc wood on the morning : the prefecture and ANDRA are not de-escalating the conflict !

Not everything in the CIGEO garden is rosy. The CIGEO suffered its first defeat on the 1st of August 2016, when standing before the court of Bar-le-Duc, the tribunal decided clearing in Lejuc wood was illegal and that all work there had to stop. ANDRA experienced yet another juridical defeat on May 22, 2017, when ANDRA’s appeal against the August 1st court condemnation failed
and the court confirmed the illegality of any construction by ANDRA in
the forest and the fines they should pay for what they did. However, instead of keeping a low profile, CIGEO continued ordering its guards to watch the Lejuc Wood despite having violence complaints already filed against them. ANDRA also attempted to force its way into the wood with machines last January, causing a scandal when one of its engineers poured gasoline on activists holding a barricade that was blocking the road access. ANDRA’s attempts to impose itself result in a rise of shields; the mobilization in Bure revealed their aggressive and rushed strategy, which often remains hidden behind the mask of a social acceptability implemented within the last decade.

CIGEO’s overconfidence shows its incompetence and inconsistency. The company claims to have guaranteed the safe burial of radioactive waste for several decades, yet one can only worry about so much amateurism. Beyond its nonsensical communication tactics and mafia practices, ANDRA has, for several months, shown a complete inability to face the situation at hand. The numerous appeals filed against the agency in recent months demonstrate the growing weakness of the CIGEO project. Their glossy-papered plans multiply, all the while they struggle to demonstrate their credibility

Environmental research (deliberately) done poorly, aggressive land acquisitions, political corruption: ANDRA shows a very dark future for the entire southern Meuse. It tried to bribe the municipal councilors of Mandres to vote in favour of the exchange of the wood, as well as it using and then lying about a mayor who tried his best to save the ship from sinking.  In the end, it is not at the Andra’s Ile-de-France headquarters in Châtenay-Malabry that a complaint will be filed against the mayor for forgery and uttering, or that we’ll consider the appeal filed by 35 inhabitants for a vote potentially made with a conflict of interest, or that we will have to deal with a divided and exhausted community.

More and more, ANDRA reveals that its promises were in fact false promises. Mayors get cold feet, residents finally dare to speak about what went wrong, and rancor takes root. Yet, the prefecture and ANDRA keep walking hand in hand; the first being an accomplice of the second, both working to dissuade and intimidate  the activists and inhabitants who are no longer afraid to raise their voice. Police continue to be omnipresent : identity checks, traffic violations, and convocations to a hearing rain down on those who support the fight against CIGEO.

Claiming that they want to prevent the environmental degradations that ANDRA has caused for over 20 years, some radical activists are determined to not go backward. The prefecture and its executioner, the ubiquitous commander Dubois, use increasingly mind-boggling and disproportionate police tactics : military jeeps and trucks, surveillance drones, hidden cameras, riot barriers in the streets of Mandres, helicopter rounds every week, daily patrols in front of the House of Resistance, systematic deployment of mobile policemen at all our events.

Therefore, let’s not confuse things : all people agree that the atmosphere is much more peaceful when no policemen or guards appear on the horizon. If someone has to take responsibility for the intensification of this conflict, it should be, without a doubt, the prefecture and ANDRA. They have created a permanent atmosphere of insecurity and extreme tension. It is not surprising that emotions and tempers are heated by increased controls and surveillance, as well as the very regular police raids on the Lejuc Wood outskirts. We run out of patience: the explosion of anger last Thursday in Mandres, when the police interrupted and shoved a tribute to a deceased activist in order to make a way for the mayor of the village.

ANDRA’s unclear communication has given way to the contemptuous brutality of the prefecture: the tone has been set, the CIGEO project will impose itself by the force of the truncheon.

We saw this violence in Notre-Dame-des-Landes, and it that triggered a wonderful impulse for national and international solidarity. Without the constructive determination we use to oppose the CIGEO and its partners, there will be the repression that, more and more, turns into Bure the Notre-Dame-des-Landes of eastern France. In the past few months, the media and hundreds of people have come to understand that this fight is not only about nuclear wastes management. It is opposing a capitalist and hostile plan, both here and in fighting zones all over the world.

From Standing Rock to Hambach, via Notre-Dame-des-Landres or Rosia Montana, we have one transversal struggle that takes shape in practices and convictions.

Tomorrow, Andra’a great circus will hold an exceptional performance in Mandres-en-Barrois !

Yesterday inhabitants from Mandres-en-Barrois had the priviledge of witnessing the great Andrastik Circus freak show arrival. The only performance will be held on Thursday at 8pm in the city hall, starring the mayor Xavier Levet who just got sued for forgery and using forged documents. We also impatiently await Emmanuel Hance who made an (almost) explosive buzz in January during his visit to the forest. And let us not forget Brutal and André, our favorite guard-gorillas, who surely won’t miss an occasion to keep the city hall “safe”.
